The red-brick Edwardian cottage is Barbette's home, which she has renovated beautifully: exposed beams, limed doors and soft colours; she even mixes her own distemper.

She cheerfully moves out for self-catering visitors and left behind are family photos and her wonderful paintings – she is an artist (and chef) with eclectic tastes.

The living room has a log fire with a 'Medici' lunette above, comfy sofas and generous rugs, while the kitchen is a treat of quarry tiles, Rayburn, a country-kitchen table and (charmingly) mismatched chairs.

The master bedroom has dusky pink walls, Turkey rugs, books, prints and a generous bed topped by another exquisite lunette.

The twin and attic rooms (a sleigh bed tucked under the eaves) are sweet; the main bathroom has a roll top bath.
Cross the old-brick paved courtyard, past terracotta pots, lavender and rosemary, to the ground-floor annexe where you find an extra bedroom (with short French-style double bed), a bathroom and... library!

The walled rose garden and potager are becoming established; the large country garden is next on the list.

Bath and Wells are 12 miles from little Brokerswood; Babington House, Longleat and the Italianate gardens of Iford manor are close.
